The aches and pains due to a child’s growth, aka growing pains, affects between 20% and 40% of all children. If you never experienced growing pains as a child, I can tell you from personal experience that growing pains can range from merely annoying to very painful.
Growing pains generally occur late in the day and usually affect a child’s legs (but can affect other parts of the body, as well). In addition, many children suffer neck or back pain, headaches or other joint problems, which are ascribed to “growing pains”. Whatever the cause, your child’s pain should be seen to right away and chiropractic care is a safe and effective method of treatment.
Growing pains need to be taken seriously. Pain leads to a decrease in activity, and movement is needed in childhood for physical strengthening and nervous stimulation. If there is too little movement, too little stimulation occurs and a slowing in speed of development may result.
Treatment in the early stages of growing pains results in greater improvement of pain and increase in mobility than if the problem becomes chronic. It is also important for children to maintain their flexibility during growth spurts. This allows children to perform in regular childhood activities free of pain and tension, and gives them the ability to function and develop normally.
Chiropractic treatment is especially effective for childhood growing pains. Chiropractic care specializes in the treatment of pain in the muscles and joints, and these are the areas primarily associated with growing pains.
